Ruptured plantaris: tennis leg

Left calf pain and swelling after heavy exercise

Patient Data

Age: 34 years old
Gender: Female

High T1/STIR/PD FATSAT signal fluid is seen in between the medial head of gastrocnemius and soleus muscles with abnormal bright STIR/PD FATSAT signal seen within the medial head of gastrocnemius and discontinuity of the fibers suggesting muscle tear.

The white arrow refers to a tendon like structure mostly the plantaris tendon. Note the abnormal signal within the medial head of gastrocnemius

Case Discussion

MRI and clinical findings are keeping with tennis leg due to plantaris rupture medial head of gastrocnemius tear.
