Salivary gland tumour frequency chart

Case contributed by A.Prof Frank Gaillard

Case Discussion

Trying to consolidated frequencies of various salivary gland tumours is a Sisyphean task, with publications varying widely in individual figures and quoting figures for different subsets. This table includes the parotid gland, lacrimal gland (modified salivary glands which are prone to the same pathologies), submandibular gland and minor salivary glands. Not all the numbers add up to 100%, and you can easily find references that disagree with it. It is intended only as vague ball-park figure.

A good rule of thumb is that as the gland gets smaller the proportion of tumours that are malignant increases.
