Salter-Harris type II fracture: proximal phalanx

Case contributed by Dr Bruno Di Muzio

Trauma involving the fifth finger of the left hand.

Patient Data

Age: 10
Gender: Male

There is a transverse fracture above and adjacent the growth plate in the proximal phalanx of the fifth finger. This fracture extends through the lateral aspect of the growth plate (see annotated images below).

Annotated image

This fracture line is predominantly above the growth plate, however there is a slight extension through the lateral aspect of the growth plate.

Case Discussion

This kind of fracture has a good prognosis as it does not extend through the epiphysis, where are the zones of proliferation.
