Scaphoid fracture with early avascular necrosis

Early avascular necrosis suggested by subtle sclerosis of the proximal scaphoid pole 6 weeks following fracture through the scaphoid waist.
Case Discussion
CT wrist shows an un-united fracture through the waist of the scaphoid. There is subtle sclerosis of the proximal scaphoid pole relative to the distal pole suggesting early avascular necrosis (AVN) as a complication of the fracture. AVN is an indication for surgical management of the fracture to help prevent future dysfunction.
