Scapular fracture

Injured shoulder while body surfing.

Patient Data

Age: 20 years
Gender: Male

Plain films showing a displaced fracture of the scapula. It was further evaluated with CT (see below).


A complex, displaced fracture of the scapula is shown. The first two images are posterior with slight differences in rotation. The third image is an anterior view.

The patient elected to have surgical reduction and internal fixation.

Case Discussion

Fractures of the scapula are infrequent, most often occurring in the body. The cause of a fracture in this part of the scapula is usually the result of direct trauma and is frequently associated with rib fractures and pneumothorax (though not in this case).
