Schwannoma of the maxillary nerve

Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Indolent swelling of the right cheek. No history of fever.

Patient Data

Age: 45 years
Gender: Female

Well-defined abnormality located in the right subcutaneous fatty space, with no extension in the masticator space or in the oral cavity.

Hypo-intensity on T1-sequence and relative hypointense signal on T2-sequence (compared to CSF).

No diffusion restriction.

Homogenous enhancement.

No other relevant abnormality in the cervical spaces.

Case Discussion

A biopsy is performed by the surgeon, which confirms a typical schwannoma, according to the pathologist.

Given its location, it is supposed to arise from a branch of the maxillary nerve.

The patient underwent a surgery with a total resection of the schwannoma.
