Scleroderma with musculoskeletal and gastrointestinal involvements

Patient Data

Age: 30 years
Gender: Female

Lack of peristalsis is noted during barium swallow .

Acro-osteolysis (resorption of the distal phalanges) and mild periarticular osteoporosis.

Case Discussion

Involvement of the esophagus, or whole digestive tract in scleroderma, or progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS), is defined by lack of peristalsis. To suppress the gravity effect, patient should be examined in lying down position (decubitus or prone).
