Sclerotic proximal pole scaphoid post fracture

Case contributed by Dr Chris O'Donnell

Follow-up following scaphoid fracture

Patient Data

Age: 65
Gender: Female

Case Discussion

Typical transverse fracture through the waist of the scaphoid on the intial x-ray. Progressive "sclerosis" of the proximal scaphoid pole together with signs of fracture healing on follow-up. Note reduction in bone density of all other bones of the wrist due to "disuse". This proximal sclerosis does not necessarily mean that avascular necrosis is inevitable.
