Scoliosis

Case contributed by A.Prof Frank Gaillard

Presentation

Scoliosis.

Patient Data

Age: 16 years
Gender: Female
Modality: X-ray

Full-spine imaging has been obtained in the PA projection and lateral projection as well as bilateral lateral bending views, and right lateral fulcrum bending views.

S-shape scoliosis with the upper curve convex to the right (apex at T8, measuring 65 degrees, moderate rotation) and the lower curve is convex to the left. Coronal balance remains neutral (C7 spinous process to S1 spinous process).

No hemivertebrae or other segmentation defects.  There are 12 pairs of ribs.

There is mild straightening of the thoracic curve when bending to the right and when bending over a right lateral chest wall fulcrum.
There is correction of the lumbar curve when bending to the left.

Secondary centres of ossification of the iliac crests remain unfused. Risser grade: 3

Post-op

Modality: X-ray

Post-operative study demonstrating marked improvement in degree of scoliosis.
