Second metatarsophalangeal joint plantar plate tear

Case contributed by Dr Chris O'Donnell

Presentation

Focal pain over the second metatarsal head with toe deformity.

Patient Data

Age: 55
Gender: Female

Linear (longitudonal) defect in the plantar plate (arrow) with surrounding soft tissue swelling but no bone marrow oedema or specific joint pathology.

Case Discussion

Plantar plates form part of the MTP joint capsule.  They are a major stabiliser of the MTP.  Disruption causes pain and deformity of the joint often with secondary joint inflammation (synovitis).
