Segmental distribution of ductal carcinoma in situ

Case contributed by Dr Garth Kruger

Patient Data

Gender: Female

Microcalcifications limited to the upper outer quadrant of the left breast

Case Discussion

Confirmed case of DCIS.

Evaluation of both the morphology of microcalcifications, and their distribution are important in distinguishing malignant from benign. Always remember that calcifications limited to a segment of the breast deserve careful workup. This case of DCIS is limited to the upper outer quadrant of the left breast. Calcifications distributed like this deserve sampling.
