Gustilo type IIIa open fracture of the right lower leg after a motorcycle accident.

Patient Data

Age: 70 years
Gender: Male

Radiographs of the knee and lower leg revealed a segmental fracture of the tibial and fibular shafts.

Case Discussion

A segmental fracture is characterized by the presence of at least two fracture lines isolating a segment of a long bone.

Segmental fractures are usually caused by high-energy trauma, such as motor vehicle accidents.
