Senile basal ganglia calcification

Case contributed by Tariq Walizai
Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Acute generalized body weakness

Patient Data

Age: 80 years
Gender: Male

Brain

Bilateral, symmetrical calcification was noted in the basal ganglia, suggestive of senile calcification.

Allowing for motion artefact, the rest of the brain parenchyma is unremarkable.

Ventricular and extra ventricular CSF spaces are prominent suggestive of brain atrophy.

No midline shift / mass effect is noted.

The patient presented to the ER with acute body weakness. After investigation, the patient was found to have electrolyte imbalance due to acute kidney injury and was then appropriately treated.

Case Discussion

The location of the calcification in combination with the age of the patient is in favor of a diagnosis of benign senile basal ganglia calcification.
