Septic arthritis and antibiotic bead treatment

Presentation

Swollen right knee. Septic arthritis?

Patient Data

Age: 60 years
Gender: Male

Moderate sized joint effusion.

A mixture of subchondral sclerosis and ill defined lucency in the medial aspect of the knee. 

Widened femoral notch. No cortical destruction.

Post surgical joint washout

x-ray

Multiple antibiotic beads in the joint space.

Post operative air and fluid in the suprapatellar pouch.

Medial joint space narrowing with subchondral sclerosis.  Widening and irregularity of the femoral notch.

Case Discussion

This patient underwent a joint washout for septic arthritis.

Antibiotic beads have been left in the medial and lateral recesses and suprapatellar pouch of the joint space.
