Serendipitous diagnosis of carcinoma left breast

Case contributed by Dr Garth Kruger

A patient is recalled for work up of an asymmetry high up in the left breast.

Patient Data

Age: Adult
Gender: Female

On a screening study, a client is recalled for work up of the density high up in the left breast. The density is not seen on the CC view.

Mag view of the actual malignancy which is in the submammary fat overlying the pectoral muscle profile (take a second look at the image above). The density for which the patient was recalled was a summation shadow.

Case Discussion

The lesion that the patient was recalled for was not the sinister one. The actual cancer is lower down projected over the profile of the pectoral muscle.

Always review the profile of the pectoral muscle on the MLO view. Train your eye to follow the line and you will find small cancers like this one.

As in the rest of radiology, beware satisfaction of search.
