31/40. Clinically RDS.

Patient Data

Age: 4 hours
Gender: Female

Widespread opacification throughout both lungs with a granular appearance.

The air bronchograms of the main bronchi are evident.

NG tube tip in distal esophagus.

Case Discussion

The typical appearances of severe respiratory distress syndrome, a condition of the premature, as in this case, due to birth prior to natural surfactant production.

Exogenous surfactant administration and respiratory support are the mainstays of treatment.
