Sigmoid diverticulitis

Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Left lower abdominal pain for last few days without fever or alteration in bowel habit.

Patient Data

Age: 40 yrs
Gender: Female
ultrasound

There is presence of a protrusion from sigmoid colon at the site of pain. Its neck is seen. There is posterior acoustic shadowing due to presence of air.  It is a diverticulum. Diverticular wall shows thickening along with adjacent colonic non-circumferencial wall thickening. Peri-diverticular fat is echogenic and non-compressible. There is local hypervascularity. There is no collection in peri-diverticular fat.

Rest of the abdominal and pelvis ultrasound was normal ( not uploaded ).

Case Discussion

Ultrasound shows typical findings of uncomplicated colonic diverticulitis; sigmoid colon in this case.

The patient was treated with oral antibiotic drugs and recovered completely; favoring the diagnosis of diverticulitis.
