Presentation

Abdominal pain and progressive distension.

Patient Data

Age: 55 years
Gender: Male
ct

Grossly dilated loop of sigmoid colon with whirl sign of the sigmoid mesentery is present inferring sigmoid volvulus. A little amount abdominopelvic free fluid is also observed. 
The prostate gland is enlarged.
Degenerative changes as osteophytosis are seen at the lumbar spine.

Case Discussion

Features are consistent with sigmoid volvulus, which occurs when the sigmoid colon twists on its mesentery, the sigmoid mesocolon.
