Abdominal pain and constipation.

Age: 70 years
Gender: Female

Significant distension of the sigmoid colon secondary to the twisting of its mesentery. No definite signs of intestinal ischemia, free fluid, or collection.

Case Discussion

Sigmoid volvulus is one of the causes of large bowel obstruction and occurs when the sigmoid colon twists around its mesentery. It is more common in the elderly.
