Sinus pericranii

Case contributed by Dr Yair Glick

Small bulge on newborn's scalp

Patient Data

Age: 1 day
Gender: Male

Right frontoparietal sickle-shaped lesion measuring 22 mm across and 8 mm in thickness, immediately adjacent to the calvaria at the region of the palpated bump. The lesion shows well-demarcated borders and heterogeneous echotexture and is vascular. There appears to be a communication between intracranial blood vessels and intralesional vessels through a bony defect in the calvaria.

Case Discussion

The ultrasonographic appearance is most compatible with sinus pericranii. The differential diagnosis includes meningocele and atretic encephalocele.

Unfortunately, there is no documentation regarding follow-up with an MRI scan.
