Sjögren syndrome

Case contributed by Brendan Cullinane

Presentation

Referred to investigate swelling over the right parotid gland. Questioning of the patient revealed she had dryness of the mouth and eyes.

Patient Data

Age: 55 years
Gender: Female
Ultrasound

Right and left parotid glands, right and left submandibular glands (images 1, 2, 3, and 4, respectively) show multiple, small, hypoechoic nodules diffusely spread throughout the glands.

Case Discussion

Multiple, small, hypoechoic nodules are diffusely spread throughout the salivary glands. The changes seemed to be more prominent on the right. In light of the symptoms, these findings suggest Sjögren syndrome. No regional lymphadenopathy was demonstrated (not shown).
