Slipped upper femoral epiphysis

Presentation

Few months of left hip and groin pain.

Patient Data

Age: 12 years
Gender: Male
x-ray

Hips are well formed with no dysplasia. Asymmetry in the lines of Klein, which appears misaligned on the left particularly on the lateral projection. Femoral capital epiphyses are symmetrical in size and appearance. 

Abnormal posteromedial angulation of the femoral head with retroversion at the epiphyseal-metaphyseal junction. High signal at the anterolateral aspect of the physics. Hip joint effusion and synovial thickening. No chondropathy. 

Case Discussion

An example of a relatively subtle slipped upper capital epiphysis on the left, confirmed with MRI. Note that the demographics are typical - the patient is an obese, adolescent male.
