Slow colon transit

Work up for chronic constipation.

Patient Data

Age: 14 years
Gender: Female

Eleven markers are ingested in this case, and abdominal x-rays are taken 40 min, 24, 72, and 120 hours later. At the end of the fifth day, ten markers (more than 20% of the original markers) are seen within the pelvic large bowel loops related to slow colon transit time.

Case Discussion

Normal colonic transit time is 20-56 hours, and most adults will clear all the markers in 4-5 days. In this case, more than 20% of the markers are present at the end of five days consistent with a slow colon transit time.
