Small bowel obstruction

Case contributed by Dr Hidayatullah Hamidi

Acute abdominal pain, vomiting and abdominal distension.

Patient Data

Age: 3 years
Gender: Female

Multiple dilated bowel loops are seen. Valvulae conniventes are seen traversing the dilated bowel loops, confirming that these are small bowel loops. No rectal gas is seen.

No free air in the peritoneal cavity to suggest perforation.

Case Discussion

Ultrasound detected numerous ascaris nematodes within one of the dilated bowel loops as the cause of intestinal obstruction.
