Study requested for suspected bowel obstruction. Abdominal distention and pain.

Age: 50
Gender: Male

Computed tomography shows dilated small bowel loops secondary to incarcerated left inguinal hernia. Note the transition point between the dilated and collapsed bowel loops at the left inguinal hernia.

Case Discussion

Intestinal obstruction due to an abdominal hernia is the second commonest cause of small bowel obstruction after adhesions.
