Small bowel obstruction on AXR

Case contributed by Craig Hacking

Presentation

Abdominal pain and distension

Patient Data

Age: 75 years
Gender: Female
x-ray

Multiple loops of small bowel are gas-filled and distended in the central abdomen. The erect projection demonstrates multiple air-fluid levels in the dilated small bowel. The hernial orifices are clear. The large bowel is collapsed. No evidence of free gas.

Case Discussion

These two images demonstrate the classic appearance of SBO in both erect and supine projections.

This patient had a history of abdominal surgery for colonic diverticulitis two decades earlier. Laparoscopy confirmed adhesions as the cause for SBO.
