Small carotid body tumor

Case contributed by Andrew Dixon

Car accident. CTA to exclude blunt cerebrovascular injury.

Patient Data

Age: 25 years
Gender: Male

Small 8 mm hyperdense round focus just above the right carotid bifurcation sitting between the ECA and ICA. This does not communicate with the artery and therefore does not represent a traumatic pseudoaneurysm. It is favored to represent a small incidental carotid body tumor (paraganglioma).

Dotatate PET

Nuclear medicine

Dotatate PET/CT confirms an avid neuroendocrine tumor at the right carotid bifurcation in keeping with paraganglioma.

Case Discussion

A small incidental carotid body tumor found on CTA in the setting of trauma with confirmation with Dotatate PET.
