Soft tissue cyst - knee

Case contributed by Dr Maulik S Patel

Swelling anterior knee - just cranial to patella -- Few wks. No history of trauma.

Patient Data

Age: about 40 - 45 yrs.
Gender: Male

There is a well-defined anechoic collection with thin wall in subcutaneous plane of suprapatellar region.

It abutts quadriceps tendon. However, knee flexion shows lesion is free from tendon.

There are intralesions tiny echoes along with an linear echogenic focus ( 3 mm ) in lower part

-- a Thorn.

No suprapatellar effusion is noted.

Case Discussion

Findings favour subcutaneous soft tissue cyst in supra-patellar region of knee along with a foreign body ( thorn  ) within.

Patient may not recollect thorn injury as in this case. However, the appearance of two converging echogenic line with a central linear lucency is very classical of thorn.
