Soft tissue foreign body - arm region

Presentation

History of penetrating injury by metal debris in the deltoid region about 5-6 years ago. Complaining of local swelling for a few days.

Patient Data

Age: 35 years
Gender: Male
ultrasound

There is a linear echogenic structure at site of swelling pointed by patient - Foreign body.

  • length: 14 mm
  • thickness: about 3 mm
  • superficial end: in subcutaneous fat
  • deeper end: in the deltoid muscle

There is a thin hypoechoic rim around the foreign body representing granulation tissue. No local collection. Twinkle artefact is noted due to irregular surface of foreign body.     

Case Discussion

Findings favor foreign body in soft tissue of arm. It was removed surgically. It was a metal foreign body.
