Soft tissue rim sign of ureteric calculus

Case contributed by Dr Ian Bickle

Right ureteric colic.

Patient Data

Age: 50
Gender: Male

Mild right hydronephrosis to the level of an obstructing upper ureteric stone.

At the level of the stone the ureter is circumferentially thickened.

Right midpole renal stone.

Case Discussion

The soft tissue rim sign occurs in the ureter in the context of a ureteric calculus. A rim of soft tissue develops around the stone which represents the oedematous ureteric wall.
