Solid periosteal reaction - hypertrophic osteoarthopathy

Case contributed by Dr Matt A. Morgan

Evaluate right knee effusion

Patient Data

Age: 60 years
Gender: Female

Solid perisosteal reaction along the femoral, tibial and fibular shafts.

No significant joint effusion.

Nuclear medicine

FDG PET-CT for staging lung cancer

Hypermetabolic left upper lobe mass corresponding to biopsy-proven lung adenocarcinoma.

Case Discussion

Solid periosteal reaction has a long differential, and hypertrophic osteoarthropathy is one of the items on the differential. Given this patient's lung cancer and no other explaining reason for the periosteal reaction, the reaction is likely hypertrophic osteoarthropathy
