Splenic abcess

Left upper quadrant pain and fever.

Patient Data

Age: 71 years
Gender: Male

  • The spleen is mildly enlarged measuring 13.5 cm. in its maximal cranio-caudal dimension, its shows encapsulated hypodense lesion its mid portion measuring about 9.7 x 6.2 cm. The lesion shows increased peripheral vascularity with no intralesional vascularity is detected.  
  • A few small hypoechoic lesions are noticed around the aforementioned splenic lesion.
  • Small left renal lower zonal about 1.5 x 1.0 cm. is noted; as well as a small right renal mid zonal 1.5 x 1.5 cm. simple cortical cyst is noted as well.  Otherwise, normal both kidneys.  

  • Mild splenomegaly with a splenic marginally enhancing cystic lesion about 10 X 7 cm is seen. Smaller marginally enhancing cystic lesions are seen adjacent to the larges splenic cystic lesions. 
  • A few bilateral renal simple cortical cysts (Bosniak type I).
  • Mild prostatic enlargement.
  • Small bilateral basal atelectatic bands.

Case Discussion

Splenic well encapsulated hypoechoic as well as marginally enhancing hypodense lesions consistent with splenic abscesses.
