Splenic infarction

Case contributed by Marina Bernat
Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Abdominal pain predominantly in the left flank of 24 hours of evolution after having carried out mountaineering activity.

Patient Data

Age: 25 years
Gender: Male
ultrasound

Splenomegaly. Heterogeneous echostructure visualizing in the lower pole, peripheral, hypoechoic image of wedge morphology, without vascularization to the color Doppler study.

ct

The spleen is enlarged, with a hypodense area with irregular borders along the lower pole, which does not enhance with intravenous contrast.

Case Discussion

It is difficult to diagnose splenic infarction by ultrasound since the symptoms in most cases are not specific. In any case, we must include it in the possible differential diagnoses and complete the US with a CT with IV contrast to assess its behavior.
