Spontaneous osteonecrosis of the talar head

Case contributed by Dr Roberto Schubert

Presentation

Foot pain on weight bearing. No history of trauma.

Gender: Female

Diffuse bone oedema of the talar head and adjacent neck. Small signal void subchondrla lines parallel to the  joint surface of the talar head. Slightly narrowed joint spaces. No further signs of degenerative joint disease.

Case Discussion

This finding is quite rare in the talar head. It probably has the same aetiology as spontaneous osteonecrosis of the knee or Freibergs infraction of the 2nd metatarsal.
