Squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix

Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Postmenopausal vaginal bleeding.

Patient Data

Age: 75 years
Gender: Female

Large lobulated soft tissue mass with irregular margin centered on the uterine cervix with obstruction of its lumen and distended fluid-filled uterine cavity (hydrometra). There is extension to the upper 2/3 of vagina with bilateral parametrial infiltration. It elicits an isosignal to the myometrium on T1, heterogeneous high signal on T2 with restricted diffusion and moderate heterogeneous enhancement on postcontrast sequences. The tumor invades the posterior wall of the urinary bladder well-demonstrated on T2 and postcontrast sequences. No significant pelvic lymphadenopathy.

No para-aortic lymphadenopathy or distant metastases on CT (not shown).

MRI features of cervical cancer, pathologically proven as a cervical squamous cell carcinoma, which is considered the most common histological subtype of cervical cancer (80-90% of cases).
