Squamous cell carcinoma of the lung

Case contributed by Mohammad Taghi Niknejad
Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Work up for cough and hemoptysis. Heavy smoker.

Patient Data

Age: 55 years
Gender: Male

A 52mm microlobulated mass is noted in the right upper lobe extending along the bronchovascular bundles.

Right hilar and mediastinal lymphadenopathy with a maximum SAD of 18 mm anterior to the right main bronchus.

Case Discussion

The patient underwent a bronchoscopy and biopsy, and histopathology evaluation confirmed squamous cell carcinoma (papillary subtype).

The microlobular outline can occur when there are different growth rates within the tumor. Extension along the bronchovascular bundles in the absence of volume loss and pleural retraction is likely to indicate tumor invasion.
