Cardiac valve replacement many years prior. Short of breath.

Patient Data

Age: 80

Median sternotomy.

Ball and cage mitral valve replacement - Starr Edwards type.

Cage of valve shown - the ball being non-metallic is rarely evident.

Case Discussion

Prosthetic heart valve (s) are commonly observed on chest x-rays.

Many types exist - some of which are largely now historial, such as the Starr Edwards ball and cage valve.
