Stener lesion

Diagnosis almost certain

Presentation

Left thumb trauma a few hours before. Complaining of thumb base pain, swelling on the ulnar aspect.

Patient Data

Age: 65 years
Gender: Male
ultrasound

Symptomatic side - Ulnar collateral ligament  

  • Absent in normal location
  • There is a hypoechoic pseudomass abutting head of the metacarpus.
  • Stress view results in a significant opening of metacarpophalangeal joint with herniation of peri-articular soft tissue into the joint.

Asymptomatic side - Ulnar collateral ligament  

  • Normal echopattern
  • Stress view does not allow opening of the metacarpophalangeal joint.

Case Discussion

An elderly male presented with post-traumatic left thumb base pain and swelling. Ultrasound reveals Stener's lesion.
