Stercoral colitis without perforation

Abdominal pain and distention.

Patient Data

Age: 75
Gender: Male

Supine images of the abdomen demonstrate large stool burden with distension of the large bowel extending from the left upper quadrant to the umbilical and hypogastric region. Distention measures 17 x 23 cm.

Subtle thickening of colonic wall with large volume of faeces. No perforation, mechanical obstruction or volvulus.

Incidental para-oesophageal hernia.

Case Discussion

Patient was managed medically and disimpacted without complications.
