Stylohyoid ligament calcification

Case contributed by Prof. Dr TAMER LÜTFİ ERDEM

The patient presented for prosthodontic rehabilitation.

Patient Data

Age: 75 years
Gender: Male

The right stylohyoid ligament is heavily calcified.

Case Discussion

Stylohyoid ligament calcification is not rare. It can be unilateral. In this case, it is interesting that despite the thick calcification of the stylohyoid ligament the patient is asmptomatic.

Facial pain when turning the head, dysphagia, foreign body sensation, pain on extending tongue, change in voice, sensation of hypersalivation, tinnitus or otalgia can be present and in these cases the term "Eagle syndrome" is used.
