Subacute combined degeneration of the cord

Case contributed by Dr Andrew Dixon

New onset lower limb sensory signs and ataxia.

Patient Data

Age: 50
Gender: Male

Sagittal T2 Subacute combined degeneration of spinal cord due to B12 deficiency. Abnormal bilateral high T2 cord signal in the dorsal columns over a relative long length.

Case Discussion

MRI reveals abnormal high T2 cervical cord signal within the bilateral dorsal columns extending from C2 to C5. The location of the signal abnormality and long length are consistent with subacute combined degeneration of the cord due to vitamin B12 deficiency.
