Subcapital femoral neck fracture

Case contributed by Mr Andrew Murphy

Patient Data

Age: 48
Gender: Male

The increased sclerosis in the left subcapital femoral neck region, along with the shortening of the femoral neck is indicative of a subcapital femoral neck fracture.

Case Discussion

A horizontal beam lateral projection of the hip is the preferred projection for suspected neck of femur fractures to avoid patient discomfort, in this case, an oblique hip has been performed. Be cautious when assessing the AP pelvis for symmetry before deciding what projection needs to follow.
