Case contributed by A.Prof Frank Gaillard

Heterogeneously enhancing mass with several foci of blooming in 4th ventricle.

Heterogeneous mass with multiple specks of calcification in 4th ventricle.

Case Discussion

Final Diagnosis:

Cerebellum, 4th ventricle: subependymoma

Gross Description:

The specimen labelled "4th ventricular tumour in formalin" consists of
several pieces of pale to pink tissue of varying size submitted in a
cavitron container and measuring in aggregate up to 3.0 x 2.5 x 0.3cm,
submitted in toto as cassette "A" through "F".

Microscopy:

Sections show a low grade glial tumour with areas of calcification and
microcyst formation. The cysts contain colloid-like material. The tumour
cells are relatively small in size, with round to oval nuclei, and are
arranged in small linear clusters and around vessels, rendering a
perivascular pseudorosette pattern. A few areas display a modest increase in cellularity. For the most part, cellularity is relatively low. Mitotic activity is not conspicuous.
