Presentation
Left jaw painful swelling
Patient Data
A 5 mm calculus is seen at the distal part of the left submandibular (Wharton’s) duct. The left submandibular gland is enlarged with a cystic appearance. There is an associated large multiloculated cystic lesion of the submandibular space with extension to the upper cervical region, measuring 53 × 36 × 35 mm.
Contralateral submandibular gland is unremarkable.
Incidental note of right palatine tonsillolith. Streak artefact from dental amalgam.
Case Discussion
Left submandibular duct stone and a multicystic lesion of left submandibular and upper cervical region, compatible with, and most likely, a mucus retention cyst (also known as a sialocyst) due to chronic obstruction.
