Presentation

Pain and soft tissue swelling on the right side of the sublingual region.

Patient Data

Age: 40 years
Gender: Male

Large stone or sialolith with axial width up to 22X10 mm and height up to 8 mm in right side anterior sublingual space within distal segment of right submandibular gland main duct (Wharton's duct) is seen. Note fatty atrophic change in right submandibular gland.

Case Discussion

The case illustrates the large dense stone or sialolith in the distal segment of the right submandibular gland main duct (Wharton's duct) distal segment on the right side sublingual space that has led to submandibular gland atrophy and fatty change. One of the main causes of salivary glands chronic sialadenitis and atrophic change is sialolith. Submandibular duct is the most common location of sialolith.
