The right submandibular gland is enlarged with ill-defined margins and heterogeneous enhancement, containing a hypodense fluid collection with numerous calculi within the glandular ducts (sialolithiasis). Fat stranding around the gland is also noted as well as enlarged right cervical / submandibular lymph nodes.
Findings consistent with acute obstructive sialadenitis with abscess formation secondary to sialolithiasis.
More than 80 % of sialolithiasis seen in obstructive sialadenitis, affect the submandibular glands.
