Submandibular obstructive sialadenitis with abscess formation

Painful swelling of the right submandibular region

Patient Data

Age: 45 years
Gender: Male

The right submandibular gland is enlarged with ill-defined margins and heterogeneous enhancement, containing a hypodense fluid collection with numerous calculi within the glandular ducts (sialolithiasis). Fat stranding around the gland is also noted as well as enlarged right cervical / submandibular lymph nodes.

Case Discussion

Findings consistent with acute obstructive sialadenitis with abscess formation secondary to sialolithiasis.

More than 80 % of sialolithiasis seen in obstructive sialadenitis, affect the submandibular glands.
