Subperiosteal abscess of femur

Presentation

Presented with the left posterior thigh pain. Total count - 26000, CRP - 118.

Patient Data

Age: 10 years
Gender: Female
x-ray

There is mild soft tissue swelling involving the thigh. There is no periosteal reaction/ fracture/ dislocation/ bone lesion.

ultrasound

The ultrasound shows hypoechoic collection with internal tiny echoes abutting the posterior femoral cortex at the site of pain pointed by the patient. It measures about 70 x 35 x 10 mm. The femoral cortex is intact without obvious irregularity. There is no collection involving the local muscles.

Case Discussion

A girl presented with the non-traumatic onset of posterior thigh pain. The radiograph of the femur did not show bony abnormality. However, ultrasound shows a subperiosteal collection involving the femur.

Surgery confirmed the ultrasound finding of a subperiosteal abscess.
