Superficial orbital dermoid cyst

Diagnosis possible

Presentation

Left orbital swelling.

Well-defined cystic density (-6 to 0 HU) lesion seen in the inner canthus of the left eye. It measures 12 x 12 mm in size.  

Case Discussion

The lesion is in the typical location at the medial angle of the orbit for a orbital dermoid cyst. The lacrimal sac and underlying bones are normal.

Differential diagnosis:

  • encephalocele: no herniation of intracranial content; no bone defect 
  • congenital lacrimal gland cyst: normal lacrimal gland seen, which is identified by presence of air locules
