Superficial thrombophlebitis

This patient complained of pain and tenderness in the posterior aspect of the proximal thigh. She was referred for ultrasound to exclude varicosities.

Patient Data

Age: about 60 yrs
Gender: Female

In the region of interest, thrombus is shown in one of the varicosities.

The adjacent fat is of increased echogenicity when compared to subcutaneous fat in an asymptomatic region.

Case Discussion

The appearances are consistent with superficial thrombophlebitis. The association with DVT has been found to be small.1
