Superior mesenteric artery syndrome

Case contributed by Dr Domenico Nicoletti

Vomiting in patient with benign spinal muscular atrophy.

Patient Data

Age: 28
Gender: Male

The horizontal portion of duodenum to the ligament of Treitz level is compressed between the aorta and the superior mesenteric artery with consequent dilatation of the proximal duodenum and stomach. The reduction of the aortomesenteric angle is due to the lack of retroperitoneal adipose tissue.

Aortomesenteric distance = 3.4 mm (normal 10-28 mm).

Aortomesenteric angle = 22.9 ° (normal range 38-56°).
